Newcastle is a city in the North-East of England which was founded in the 2nd century AD under Emperor Hadrian with the name Pons Aelius. It is home to many historical and modern structures as well as Newcastle University (one of the UK’s leading international universities) which is home to The Hatton Gallery (containing works by Kurt Schwitters, Francis Bacon, Victor Pasmore, William Roberts and Paolo di Giovanni). Additionally, Newcastle University was also the first institution in Europe, second in the world, to be given permission to pursue stem-cell research in human embryos.
