London is the largest urban area and capital of England and the UK. As of 2001, the Greater London Urban Area has a population of 8,278,251 and the metropolitan area is estimated to have a total population of between 12 and 14 million. London has had a very colourful history, and now it plays a key role as a major global city, being a great financial and cultural centre as well as a key influence on politics, entertainment, media, fashion and of course the arts. Like many capital cities and surrounding areas, London has a very diverse population, and is said over 300 languages are spoken within the city.
